The homeless are typically portrayed as unemployed people living on the street or in homeless shelters. Yet this book shows that there is a broader population who may be working full time but still can’t find a safe and affordable place to live. They are doubling up with friends or relatives, sleeping in cars, staying in exploitative extended-stay hotels and rooming houses. The book, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2026, tells powerful stories of five families in Atlanta who are contending with gentrification and the high cost of housing. Even if they can temporarily find a place to live, they are a medical emergency, a broken car, or a lost job away from disaster, and at the mercy of private equity firms and other corporate landlords who evict them in order to upscale their apartments and charge higher rents. The obstacles they face are overwhelming, but the courage and determination they show in fighting for their children and families are inspiring.
